MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Reliever Joel Zumaya’s painful right arm injury marred Detroit’s move into first place, after the Tigers used four first-inning runs against Francisco Liriano to beat the Minnesota Twins 7-5 on Monday night.
Brennan Boesch and Miguel Cabrera hit two-run doubles in the first off Liriano, who surrendered a season-high six runs in six-plus innings while the Tigers passed the Twins for a half-game lead in the AL Central.
That took the background to Zumaya’s health, though, when the hard-throwing right-hander squirmed and winced around on the mound in obvious pain after throwing a pitch with one out in the eighth inning.
Zumaya, who missed large chunks of the last two seasons because of shoulder problems, was in so much discomfort his right thumb was shaking while the trainer checked him out.

Julie Bowen Breast feeding, the star of the hit sit-com Modern Family on ABC, has been in the news the last two days for sharing pictures of herself breast-feeding her twin babies two-at-a-time on a a late night talk show.  Bowen used her appearance on George Lopez Tonight to poke fun at herself and described nursing her twins as a great way to lose weight, calling her twins “two liposuction machines” that “suck it all out, the fat.”

Now there are stirrings that Bowen and Lopez should not have shown the picture. Another talk show, The View, apparently refused to air the same photo. A Fox news blogger asked in a survey if: “These are private shots that should be kept as such”? (The counterpoint from Bonnie Fuller is here.) So the media filter has reduced the important act of breast-feeding to either an inappropriate form of exhibitionism or a weight-loss technique.

Not to be the one without the sense or humor or sense of outrage, but amid all the attention, aren’t there other reasons to breast-feed your kids if you can?

Two-week old conjoined twins born in the Gaza strip died in Riyadh after doctors said their condition was too delicate to operate, a Saudi official said.

Frail health and bacterial infection killed Ritaj and Rittal Abu Assi, Health Minister Dr Abdullah al-Rabeeah announced in a statement published by the official Saudi news agency.

The twins were born in Khan Yunis on March 27 joined at the chest and sharing a defective heart and other organs.

They were sent to the King Abdulaziz Medical City’s special conjoined twins centre on Tuesday for a possible separation operation.

But after examining the twins, doctors said a day later that their organs were too damaged and their health too critical to undertake the operation.

CLEARWATER , Fla. — The Minnesota Twins have signed center fielder Denard Span to a five-year, $16.5 million contract extension.

“We go through a pretty good checklist of criteria before we enter discussions with a player about a long-term contract and he has been very good for us for two years,” Twins general manager Bill Smith said before Saturday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies. “We thought the time was right.
