Brett Favre told his teammates he would not be returning to the Minnesota Vikings according to multiple online reports. ESPN NFL reporter Adam Shefter said 40-year-old Favre sent his teammates a text message reading “this is it.”
It is not clear whether or not “this is it” is referring to his time with the Vikings or with his NFL career. The sources also said a press release is expected sometime today.
The associated Press added that a source said Favre told coach Brad Childress his ankle was not responding well to surgery and rehabilitation in a phone call.
While it’s entirely believable that Brett Favre could be done with football considering his banged up ankle coupled with the fact he has not appeared at the Vikings training camp yet, some will still doubt a Favre retirement.
This is the third alleged retirement for Favre and last season he helped the Vikings to the NFC title game against the eventual Super Bowl champion new Orleans Saints. Favre has one year left on his two-year contract with the Vikings.
