I just rode up the elevator with Fox broadcaster and former Dodger Eric Karros, who asked me the question of the hour: Are the Giants going to do anything?
I said I doubted it. that was an informed guess after checking in with sources this morning.
Here is the Giants’ problem: They don’t feel they can trade Jonathan Sanchez or Madison Bumgarner, and those are the guys every team wants for a significant bat or reliever.
If Bumgarner were a second- or third-year pitcher, I could see GM Brian Sabean dealing Sanchez. but Bumgarner is in his first year. The team has no real idea how many innings they can get from the rookie or how his arm will respond in August and September. The Giants will go only as far as their rotation takes them.
The Giants keep checking in on Adam Dunn. The Nats still want either of the two starters — too steep a price for a two-month rental, in Sabean’s eyes. as the sun rose this morning, it seemed more likely than not that the Jays will hold onto major-league home run leader Jose Bautista.
That’s what I learned. There’s more from my talented and well-plugged-in competitors from the dot.com [...]
Sources said Thursday that the Giants continued to explore the thin market for left-handed relievers, but their prospects were no better for adding a bat. the Washington Nationals continued to ask the Giants to break up their rotation to acquire Adam Dunn, the one left-handed hitter who could make a significant difference in their lineup.
The Toronto Sun and Sports Illustrated baseball writer Jon Heyman reported that the Giants are among the teams interested in acquiring outfielder Jose Bautista, who leads all of baseball with 30 homers.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy said that GM Brian Sabean has engaged in “a lot of talk” for a left-handed reliever, with names like Baltimore’s will Ohman and Toronto’s Scott Downs believed to be at the forefront.
The NL West-leading Padres obtained the 36-year-old Miguel Tejada and more than $1.15 million. the Padres gave up Double-A right-hander Wynn Pelzer to get Tejada, who is expected to be in uniform on tonight for a series opener against Florida.
• PHILLIES — Three-time All-Star Roy Oswalt gave his OK to a trade from Houston to Philadelphia, becoming the latest star pitcher to join the hard-charging Phillies. after getting Roy Halladay in the off-season, the two-time defending NL [...]
